Overview

HonorHealth Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency offers a unique training opportunity since it is the only PM&R residency in Arizona, having started in 2019 and graduating its first residents in 2022. The program provides residents with diverse clinical experiences across multiple reputable facilities, helping them refine their career paths within the realm of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Residents rotate at HonorHealth facilities as well as at prestigious institutions such as the Phoenix VA, the Barrow Neurological Institute, the Mayo Clinic, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, thus ensuring a well-rounded educational experience that prepares graduates for either immediate employment or fellowship pursuits 1.

The residency program consists of four continuous years of training. The first year is designated to the HonorHealth Internal Medicine Residency Program, eliminating the need for a separate preliminary application. As only four residents are accepted per cohort, there is an emphasis on personalized education and frequent one-on-one faculty interaction 1.

Curriculum Overview

The PM&R residency curriculum is designed to provide extensive exposure to both inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient rotations are conducted at institutions such as HonorHealth Rehabilitation Hospital, HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, and the Barrow Neurological Institute, addressing multiple specialties including traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and general rehabilitation 2.

Outpatient rotations occur at leading facilities like the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic, encompassing areas like musculoskeletal care, pain management, neurorehabilitation, and more 2. Each resident has the flexibility to choose five elective blocks and participates in a comprehensive didactic curriculum featuring various educational formats, including lectures, journal clubs, and interactive sessions 2.

Research and Quality Improvement

Residents have access to the ResQIPS (Research, Quality Improvement, and Patient Safety) initiative, which links them with experts to bolster their scholarly work. The program prioritizes quality improvement through dedicated time and structured training in this essential area 3.

Diversity and Well-Being Initiatives

The HonorHealth PM&R Residency program has a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing education on health care disparities and fostering an inclusive environment for all residents. Regular wellness activities and lectures offer opportunities for residents to focus on their well-being 3. The program cultivates a supportive atmosphere, promoting healthy work-life balance while providing ample resources, such as access to complimentary food and beverages 3.

Application Process and Requirements

For prospective residents, applications are accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). It is important to note that the program does not sponsor visas of any type, and applicants must be currently enrolled in a medical school or actively engaged in clinical practice within the past 12 months 1. The application deadline for this residency is October 15, with interviews conducted from November through January.

Additional Opportunities

The PM&R Medical Student Program offered by HonorHealth includes a 4-week rotation designed for fourth-year medical students (MS4s). This rotation emphasizes the skills needed in post-acute care settings and provides exposure to a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Students are required to meet specific application criteria, including proof of immunizations and an updated CV 3.

In summary, HonorHealth's PM&R residency program presents a robust and dynamic training environment that emphasizes quality education, diverse clinical experiences, well-being, and equity, making it an attractive option for incoming residents in this specialty.
