The residency aims to cultivate compassionate, patient-centered physicians who are well-prepared to practice independently or pursue fellowship training in subspecialties.
Interview Process
The interview committee conducts a thorough, holistic review of all applications. During the 2025 recruitment season, 50-60 applicants will be interviewed for 2 categorical and 2 advanced positions. The interviews will be held virtually via Zoom, requiring candidates to schedule their slots within 72 hours of receiving an invitation.
Program Structure
There are 14 residency positions, with two residents entering as interns (categorical) and two as advanced residents (PGY-2). The program provides extensive clinical exposure across diverse settings, including UC Davis Medical Center, UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital, and affiliated hospitals like the VA Northern California Healthcare System and Kaiser Permanente. This variety ensures that residents develop a robust set of skills to manage various rehabilitation needs.
Clinical Rotations
Residents gain practical experience through a series of rotations that occur throughout their training. The rotations span different PM&R specialties, ensuring comprehensive exposure. Major clinical sites include:
- UC Davis Medical Center: A Level 1 trauma center offering a wide range of adult and pediatric rehabilitation services.
- UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital: A dedicated facility for acute adult rehabilitation with specialized units.
- Shriners Children's Northern California: Focused on pediatric rehabilitation covering conditions such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and others.
Each clinical site allows residents to engage in hands-on learning and patient care related to neuromuscular, orthopedic, and other rehabilitation issues.
Didactic Curriculum
The didactic component consists of a structured curriculum that emphasizes both basic and clinical sciences within PM&R. Residents attend weekly seminars, journal clubs, and case conferences. Specific highlights include:
- Basic and Clinical Science Series: Weekly seminars covering foundational topics in PM&R.
- Case Conferences: Monthly reviews of clinical cases presenting diagnostic challenges.
- Imaging and EMG Conferences: Monthly sessions focused on imaging studies and electrodiagnostic consultations.
This intensive educational approach equips residents with the necessary analytical skills and knowledge base.
Research Opportunities
Research is a key component of the training, with residents expected to complete a research project resulting in a manuscript suitable for publication. Instruction on research methodology and data analysis is provided, and residents are encouraged to present their findings at national conferences.
Resident Wellbeing
The program is committed to the wellbeing of its residents, promoting a balanced lifestyle through team-building activities and support systems. Initiatives include wellness retreats and social events designed to foster camaraderie among residents.
Application Requirements
To apply, candidates must submit their applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Required materials comprise completed applications, letters of recommendation (ideally including one from the medical school Dean), a Dean's letter, medical school transcripts, and a statement outlining their interest in PM&R. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) may also apply, and additional details about visa sponsorship for IMGs are provided by the program.
Visa Support
The program is favorable towards international applicants and is capable of sponsoring J-1 and H-1B visas as required, ensuring necessary legal documentation and support for those qualifying for such pathways during their training.
Competitiveness
The UC Davis PM&R program is regarded as highly competitive, attractive to both U.S. and international graduates. The diverse training opportunities and supportive educational environment make it an appealing choice.
