Kent Hospital/Brown University Program

The Kent Hospital/Brown University Internal Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME accredited program situated in Warwick, Rhode Island, which is a vibrant, academic community hospital dedicated to excellence in medical education. Curriculum and Rotations

The internal medicine training curriculum incorporates six core competencies, focusing on medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning, and system-based practice. Residents will engage in various rotations, including inpatient care, critical care, ambulatory medicine, and subspecialties such as cardiology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, and women's health.

Throughout their training, residents have the opportunity to participate in numerous rotations, specifically tailored to their interests and career goals. They will engage in a variety of clinical settings, including outpatient sub-specialty rotations to enhance their practical knowledge and competencies in managing a diverse patient population.1

Unique Program Features

The program emphasizes a strong commitment to scholarly activity and research. Residents are required to complete a quality improvement project during their second year and are strongly encouraged to engage in research initiatives. Residents will also have access to a range of educational resources, including teaching conferences, journal clubs, and board review sessions designed to prepare them for the ABIM certification exam.

Additionally, the program offers specialized tracks such as the Clinician Educator Track and the Population Health Track, which provide focused education on medical education and population health management respectively. This track prepares residents to navigate the complexities of health care systems and affords them the skills needed to engage with multidisciplinary teams.2

Training Sites

Most rotations take place at Kent Hospital, yet certain specialized training will occur at other affiliated institutions, including Women & Infants Hospital, Butler Hospital, and Rhode Island Hospital. This arrangement allows residents to gain broad exposure to various medical environments and practices, complementing their education at Kent Hospital.

The program accepts applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and requires the submission of COMLEX or USMLE scores, a Dean's letter, transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Additionally, applicants must be eligible for J1 visa sponsorship, which is available for qualified international applicants.4
