Internal Medicine Residency Program Overview

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Larkin Community Hospital is a three-year postgraduate training program designed to offer a comprehensive education and training in internal medicine. This program emphasizes the study and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across all ages. It incorporates a structured curriculum that includes advanced training in specialties such as Pulmonology, Cardiology, Intensive Care, and many more, aimed at preparing residents for board certification exams.

Curriculum

The residency curriculum is divided into three years, with each year structured around specific rotations and didactic sessions. The first year (PGY-1) includes four months of inpatient internal medicine, with additional experiences in areas such as Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, and Emergency Medicine. Year two (PGY-2) offers additional inpatient internal medicine exposure, outpatient experiences, and rotations through Nephrology, Infectious Disease, and elective rotations.

In the third year (PGY-3), residents focus on inpatient medicine with extensive rotations in Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, and Neurology, along with their elective months. Residents will also participate in didactic lectures held weekly, covering topics like Tumor Board and Grand Rounds, in addition to regular journal clubs and board review sessions.

Larkin Community Hospital operates two campuses—one in South Miami and another in Hialeah—both of which serve as training sites for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. The Palm Springs Campus in Hialeah is a full-service acute care hospital, ensuring that residents acquire varied clinical experiences while working with a diverse patient population.
