The Florida International University/Baptist Health Internal Medicine Residency trains compassionate and skilled physicians dedicated to improving health and well-being through quality care and collaboration. Baptist Hospital, the flagship facility of Baptist Health, has over 900 beds and is one of the most respected medical centers in South Florida. It is complemented by the Miami Cancer Institute, which has earned accolades for its cancer care and research, and the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, recognized for its leadership in cardiovascular care. Residents also engage in care at the Baptist Health Primary Care Center, which offers dedicated spaces for education and collaboration.

Curriculum

The program utilizes a block schedule, alternating four weeks of inpatient rotations with two weeks of electives, subspecialties, or outpatient care. During inpatient rotations, residents have three half-days dedicated to their continuity clinic and one half day for wellness, which helps maintain work-life balance and supports resident well-being.

• Simulation Education: Residents engage in simulated patient encounters to build complex care skills using advanced simulation technology, such as ultrasound training within the institution's new simulation center.

The curriculum includes a two-week Procedure Team rotation for second-year residents that focuses on performing essential internist procedures such as central venous access and lumbar puncture. This hands-on training is complemented by academic conferences tailored to prepare residents for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam.

Application Requirements

The Internal Medicine Residency is competitive and attracts talented individuals dedicated to serving the South Florida community. Application requirements include:

• Passed scores on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or COMLEX 1 and 2 before February 1.
• A valid ECFMG certificate for international medical graduates.
• Eligibility for resident physician registration with the state of Florida.
• Completed ERAS application, medical school transcripts, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and a letter from the medical school dean.

Visa Sponsorship

The program offers sponsorship for J-1 visas for matched residents needing assistance with immigration requirements.

Application Considerations

While recent domestic clinical experience and graduation are preferred, the program does not impose strict cutoffs regarding the year of graduation. Signaling during the application process may influence interview invitations, although it does not affect final ranking placements.
