University of Puerto Rico Program

The Pathology Residency Program at the University of Puerto Rico is designed to provide comprehensive training in both anatomic pathology (AP) and combined anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP). It aims to develop highly skilled medical professionals equipped with the essential knowledge and expertise needed for a career in pathology.

This residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), ensuring that it meets the standards required for training future pathologists. The program offers a 3-year training in anatomic pathology and a 4-year program for those pursuing combined training in anatomic and clinical pathology, preparing residents to become Board eligible and Board certified by the American Board of Pathology.

Anatomic Pathology Training

The Anatomic Pathology track focuses on developing the technical and diagnostic skills necessary for interpreting a wide range of surgical, cytological, and autopsy cases. Residents gain proficiency in understanding the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and biological behavior of disease. The program emphasizes the importance of accurately describing both gross and microscopic findings and correlating them with clinical data to establish diagnoses.

The autopsy service conducts approximately 120 autopsies each year, exposing residents to a vast diversity of pathology. In the surgical pathology rotation, residents engage with over 10,000 surgical specimens annually. Additionally, they partake in intra-operative consultations, allowing for direct interaction with surgical teams and hands-on experience with frozen section preparations.

Clinical Pathology Training

The Clinical Pathology track provides residents with a thorough grounding in laboratory medicine, including its operational aspects. Residents execute analytical procedures, engage in quality assurance methodologies, and serve as a liaison between the clinical laboratory and healthcare providers, addressing issues that may arise in laboratory test ordering and interpretation. Major clinical rotations include Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Hematology and Coagulation, Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine, Laboratory Administration, and Molecular Pathology.

Assessment and Progression

Contracts for residents within the program are renewed annually based on successful rotation completions and the passing of necessary examinations. Regular evaluations are conducted by faculty to ensure that each resident is meeting the established educational goals.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must graduate from a USA LCME-accredited medical school and submit the National Residency Matching Program application through ERAS. Specific requirements include:

• Curriculum Vitae
• Personal statement outlining professional goals
• Official transcripts from premedical and medical institutions
• Recommendation letters, including one from the Dean of the medical school
• Passing scores of USMLE Parts I and II
• Two additional letters of recommendation
• Puerto Rico Medical License (provisional or permanent)

For foreign medical graduates, additional requirements include an official ECFMG certificate and a visa permit if not a US citizen. Proficiency in both Spanish and English is also a requirement. Moreover, the application deadline is November 29th.

Visa Support

The program supports visa applications for international residents, specifically offering sponsorship for J-1 and H-1B visas, allowing international graduates an opportunity to train in the United States.

Competitiveness

Applicants for the residency program should be aware that it is competitive. The program welcomes graduates from US MD and DO schools as well as highly qualified IMG candidates, making it relatively friendly toward these groups. Prospective residents should ensure they meet or exceed the necessary qualifications and demonstrate a strong background in pathology or related fields.
