The University of Puerto Rico's Surgery Residency Program aims to prepare residents for diverse career paths in surgery, whether in academics, subspecialty, rural, or private practice. Throughout five years, residents receive comprehensive surgical training characterized by close supervision and a progressive curriculum highlighting increasing responsibility and complexity.

Residency Structure and Curriculum

The residency program operates on a five-year structure (PGY-1 to PGY-5), with a focus on developing surgical expertise across various domains. The first year emphasizes learning fundamental patient management and basic operative skills through rotations in various surgical specialties, including trauma, vascular, pediatric, and colorectal surgery, among others.

In the second year, residents gain a broader exposure to subspecialties, while the third year concentrates on enhancing surgical skills through greater participation in consultations and decision-making processes alongside major procedures. Senior residents in the final two years assume more significant responsibility, often leading operations under direct staff supervision, which contributes to their maturity and judgment as surgical practitioners.

Clinical Rotations and Training Sites

Residents rotate through several hospitals and clinical facilities, including the University District Hospital, UPR Carolina, and the Oncologic Hospital. Each location provides a diverse array of clinical cases, enhancing residents' exposure to significant surgical experiences and the complexities of surgical patient care. Subsidiary departments such as plastic surgery and pediatric surgery also participate in providing comprehensive training for the residency program.

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

The program is recognized for its competitiveness and welcomes candidates from various backgrounds, including International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and students with a DO degree. Applicants are expected to submit a comprehensive application, including a CV, personal statement, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and proof of clinical proficiency through USMLE examinations.

Furthermore, visa sponsorship is available for residents who are not U.S. citizens. The program sponsors various visa types, including H-1B and J-1 visas, catering to a diverse cohort of applicants, thus creating an inclusive training environment.
