Ascension St Vincent Hospital Indianapolis Program

The Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Anesthesia Residency Program is dedicated to the training of highly skilled anesthesiologists, physician scholars, and leaders in the field of anesthesiology. The program emphasizes the development of clinical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to provide expert care during patients' most vulnerable times. Applications for the residency are managed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program accepts a total of four advanced residents annually, who are expected to start their residency on July 1, one year after their application submission. Candidates must pass the USMLE and/or COMLEX exams, with all steps completed within two attempts, prior to February 1 of the application year. Additionally, three letters of recommendation are necessary, including one from a Chair or Program Director in Anesthesia, if applicable. To qualify, applicants should have completed one year of U.S. hands-on clinical experience, though observerships and research experience are not accepted as valid clinical experience. The program is unique in its acceptance of only J-1 visas for international medical graduates.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured over a three-year period, focusing on diverse anesthesiology practices across various settings. The first year is dedicated to mastering the fundamentals of preoperative and postoperative care. The second and third years allow residents to hone their skills in specialized areas such as neurology, cardiac care, pediatrics, and pain medicine, progressively increasing their responsibilities and independence in clinical practice. A detailed schedule by postgraduate year includes rotations in general anesthesia, pediatrics, obstetrics, and specialized services like chronic and acute pain management.

The program boasts a rich faculty of approximately 96 full-time anesthesiologists, specializing in various fields including cardiac, thoracic, pediatric, and pain management. The program is enhanced by the partnership with a large private practice anesthesia group, Northside Anesthesia Services, allowing residents to learn in an environment with no competing providers. Application Process and Expectations

Applications are accepted until November 30th, with interviews being conducted by invitation only, involving active participation from faculty in the selection process. The call schedule allows for a balance of responsibilities with adequate supervision, encouraging learning while managing workload efficiently. Participation in monthly Morbidity and Mortality reviews as well as weekly lectures is mandatory, contributing to continuous education throughout the residency.
