Firelands Regional Medical Center Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Firelands Regional Medical Center is committed to developing proficient physicians capable of addressing the broad spectrum of family medicine. Curriculum

The three-year curriculum adheres to the guidelines set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) but remains flexible to accommodate individual educational needs. Inpatient rotations predominantly take place at Firelands, complemented by opportunities at local community hospitals such as Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, and ProMedica Memorial Hospital. Integral components of the curriculum include structured training in end-of-life care and nursing home medicine 1.

The residency program features comprehensive didactic lectures within a conference center setting, which includes sessions for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) training, grand rounds, journal clubs, and cancer conferences. Additionally, the practice management series focuses on critical business elements such as contract negotiation, medico-legal issues, risk management, and billing and coding 1.

Ambulatory care experience is gained at the Family Health Services (FHS) clinic, operating as a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Here, residents manage their own patient panels, with PGY-1 residents working a half day each week, while PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents work three half days weekly. A robust electronic medical record (EMR) system facilitates clinical documentation both on-site and remotely, enhancing the training experience 1.

Unique Aspects of the Program

Firelands also offers an integrative medicine track, in collaboration with the University of Arizona's Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. This unique pathway includes an interactive, competency-based curriculum tailored for primary care clinicians, alongside hands-on training sessions 1.

Application Information

To be eligible for the Family Medicine Residency Program, applicants must have graduated from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) within the previous two years, or from a college of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) within the same time frame. For international medical graduates, a valid ECFMG certificate is required prior to appointment, or candidates must possess a full, unrestricted medical license from a U.S. jurisdiction 1.
