McLaren Port Huron’s Internal Medicine Residency Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), ensuring that the training meets high educational standards. The primary training site is located in Port Huron, Michigan, which provides a dynamic and diverse patient population, enriching residents' clinical experience.

Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum follows an innovative X + Y block schedule consisting of inpatient and outpatient rotations. The structure of the rotations includes:

• Inpatient Medicine Teaching Service: 12 weeks
• Continuity Clinic: 12 weeks
• Night Float: 8 weeks
• ICU: 10 weeks
• Cardiology: 2 weeks
• Electives: 4 weeks

Subsequent years feature:

• Inpatient Medicine Teaching Service: 8 weeks
• Night Float: 4 weeks
• ICU: 6 weeks
• Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
• Geriatrics: 2 weeks
• Electives: 6 weeks

Additionally, the third year emphasizes individualized learning opportunities allowing for tailored rotations across diverse specialties such as Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, and more, with a total individualized learning experience spanning 6 months.

Didactic Experiences

Academic activities are paramount in the residency program. An Academic Half Day occurs weekly, offering residents opportunities to engage in:

• Grand Rounds
• Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) discussions
• Core Curriculum sessions
• Journal Club
• Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives
• Pharmacology education
• Coding and Billing lectures

Application Process

McLaren Port Huron participates in the AAMC National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Applicants must submit a completed ERAS application, alongside the following documentation:

• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• A minimum of three medical school letters of recommendation
• Passing scores on USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS or COMLEX equivalents prior to graduation
• ECFMG certification if applicable at the start of residency

While US citizenship or legal residency status is required for eligibility, the program does not sponsor visas.

Selection Criteria

The resident selection committee evaluates applicants based on preparedness, academic credentials, communication skills, personal qualities, motivation, and integrity. Interviews are conducted virtually, typically from November through January, with a primary focus on matching resident goals with the program’s objectives.

Resident Experience and Scholarly Activities

Residents are encouraged to partake in scholarly activities that include presenting at grand rounds and leading QI projects. Each resident is expected to complete at least one scholarly project during their training.
