McLaren Port Huron’s Family Medicine Residency Program is structured to develop compassionate and skilled family medicine physicians dedicated to patient-centered care across diverse healthcare needs. Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is organized into a series of monthly rotations, allowing residents to gain comprehensive clinical experience. • Inpatient Medicine Teaching Service: 2 months
• Night Float: 1 month
• Emergency Medicine: 1 month*
• Outpatient Pediatrics: 2 months
• OB/GYN: 1 month
• General Surgery: 1 month

*Note that there are two distinct Emergency Medicine rotations, one focusing on adult emergencies and the other on pediatric cases.

Residents are encouraged to explore electives during their training, with nine available months specifically designated for individualized experiences in areas such as internal medicine, cardiology, and rheumatology 1.

Clinical Experience

Clinical experience in the program is robust, with PGY-1 residents participating in a weekly Family Medicine continuity clinic. As residents progress, the clinic hours increase, offering 1.5 days and two full days per week respectively for PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents. This continuity of care helps residents develop essential skills in managing patient relationships over longer periods 1.

Didactics

The didactic portion of the program includes a structured Academic Half Day that encompasses various educational activities such as Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, quality improvement discussions, and sessions on pharmacology, coding, and billing. Application Process

The program is currently participating in the AAMC National Resident Match Program (NRMP) and utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for applications. Required documents include a completed ERAS application, CV, three or more letters of recommendation, and passing scores on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 or COMLEX exams 1.

Requirements and Selection

Applicants must possess US citizenship or legal residency status in the United States, as visas are not sponsored by the program 1.
