The General Surgery Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a comprehensive five-year program designed to provide thorough training in all facets of general surgery and surgical subspecialties. This residency offers various opportunities, including an optional one to two years of dedicated research, allowing residents to gain expertise before entering competitive fellowships or general surgery practice.

Eight categorical residency positions are available each year, along with two dedicated research track positions and 14 preliminary internship positions. Residents rotate through various surgical subspecialties, trauma, burn, general surgery, and community general surgery rotations across multiple clinical sites.

Rotation Sites

Residents primarily rotate at the Downtown Charleston Campus, including the Main Hospital, Ashley River Tower (ART), Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital. The program also collaborates with community hospitals such as McLeod Regional Medical Center, Tidelands Medical Center, and Roper Hospital. Both adult and pediatric hospitals have Level One trauma center status, enhancing residents' exposure to complex surgical cases.

Specific rotation assignments vary by postgraduate year (PGY) and include essential specialties such as trauma surgery, surgical oncology, gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, and vascular surgery.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured across five clinical years. In PGY1, residents focus on foundational surgical skills, rotating through different surgical services with options for electives, potentially including anesthesia or orthopedic surgery. PGY2 intensifies exposure to pediatric surgery, trauma, surgical critical care, and transplant surgery.

As residents progress to PGY3, they engage in advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and transplant surgeries, alongside community rotation experiences. PGY4 and PGY5 years involve serving as senior residents and chief residents, overseeing the surgical care process, and assuming maximum responsibility in surgical practice.

Research Opportunities

Research is emphasized within the program, with dedicated research residents and opportunities for clinical or basic science projects. Residents can engage in extensive research experiences, supported by faculty mentorship and access to multiple research facilities. The program organizes a Surgery Research Day to highlight residents' accomplishments in research.

Each resident is required to write two publishable manuscripts and complete a Quality Improvement (QI) project during their training, contributing to their overall academic and scientific development.

Regular didactic sessions are part of the residency, including weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, basic science seminars, and journal clubs. This structured approach ensures residents gain comprehensive knowledge in critical surgical topics and invite guest faculty and experts to enhance learning.

Simulation training is integral, allowing residents to refine technical skills within a controlled environment to prepare them effectively for real surgical cases. Evaluation occurs continuously through clinical assessments at the end of each rotation. Biannual evaluations assess residents’ progress, including ABSITE scores and research contributions. Resident input into rotation evaluations is actively sought to enhance the program's continuous improvement.

Visa and Application Requirements

The General Surgery Residency Program at MUSC does not offer visa sponsorship for applicants, impacting international medical graduates. Competitive applicants are typically those who have excelled in academics, have robust letters of recommendation, and display strong communication skills. Specific application materials include a transcript, MSPE, personal statement, and USMLE scores.

While there are no strict requirements regarding the year of graduation or maximum failed STEP exams, competitively successful applicants often have achieved excellent academic records with preferably no failed attempts.
