The Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center/Mercy Health Partners Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a comprehensive and highly established program that has been training emergency medicine physicians since 1974. It offers a three-year ACGME-accredited curriculum with 14 positions available each year. The program is known for its strong foundation, having graduated close to 500 residents who now work across the globe. The program director, in position since 1991, emphasizes developing residents into exceptional emergency medicine physicians.

Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center serves as a critical hub for emergency care, being the only adult Level 1 and pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center in Toledo, and also hosts the only Burn Center in the area. The emergency department had a volume of 55,380 patients in 2022, providing residents exposure to a wide variety of both common and complex pathologies.

Key highlights of the program include the opportunity for senior residents to participate in an aeromedicine curriculum as primary flight physicians for the Life Flight/Mobile Life Critical Care Transportation Network starting their second year. The program aims to prepare residents comprehensively for independent practice in emergency medicine, instilling the skills necessary for lifelong learning and advocating for patients.

The curriculum is structured around a 13-block academic schedule offering robust training in various critical care settings, with unique experiences such as an Observation Unit run by EM interns and a Pediatric ICU rotation. Residents are encouraged to engage in an aeromedicine curriculum, medical simulation, trauma labs, and monthly simulation training tailored to enhance critical care skills.

For application, the program accepts candidates through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Basic requirements include being a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or able to obtain a visa, with a preference for H-1B Visa candidates, though J1 Visas are considered on a very limited case-by-case basis. Applicants should preferably have graduated with an MD or DO degree within the past two years, have US healthcare experience, and have passed USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 (with Step 2 preferred for interview selection) ideally on the first attempt. The selection process also favors those who have passed Step 3 by the first date of employment for H1-B Visa applicants.

Mercy Health provides a competitive compensation package for residents, including salaries that increase with each year of training, comprehensive insurance options, a moving expense allowance, educational sign-on bonuses, and various other benefits aimed at supporting residents throughout their training.
