The ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is conducted in partnership with Primary Health Care, Inc. to form the MercyOne Des Moines/PHC Consortium. This collaboration enhances graduate medical opportunities in Iowa.

Categorical Track: This track is designed for residents interested in internal medicine, subspecialties, academic medicine, or hospitalist roles. Residents will engage in a comprehensive curriculum, work closely with faculty leaders, gain exposure to diverse subspecialties, and develop strong clinical skills in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Primary Care Track: Ideal for residents aiming to become excellent primary care physicians or pursue specialized primary care, global health, or academic medicine. Residents will receive specialized training in outpatient care, preventive medicine, patient-centered communication, chronic disease management, and continuity of care.

The program is a three-year program offering a Categorical Track with 10 residents and a Primary Care Track with 3 residents at each postgraduate level. Inpatient services include rotations in various subspecialties, and elective rotations are also available.

The didactic plan includes lectures, case-based learning, team-building exercises, morning reports, multidisciplinary conferences, Journal Club, board review, and point-of-care ultrasound. The program supports the development of scholarly activities for residents.

Residents will work closely with general internists and fellowship-trained physicians, gaining exposure to procedures related to internal medicine practice. The curriculum emphasizes a balance of inpatient and outpatient experiences to ensure well-rounded training.

The Primary Care Track offers additional ambulatory medicine training, preparation in patient care coordination, and a diverse patient population for continuity of care. Residents can customize their experiences based on their career goals, participate in Quality Improvement projects, and engage in research opportunities to enhance their clinical skills.

If you are looking for a program that provides a robust combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences, with a focus on comprehensive and tailored training in internal medicine, MercyOne Des Moines/PHC Consortium could be a suitable choice for your residency training.
