The Pediatric Radiology fellowship program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is dedicated to providing advanced training in the field of pediatric imaging. Mission

The mission of the Section of Pediatric Radiology is centered on delivering exceptional imaging services tailored specifically for children. This includes not only advanced diagnostic capabilities but also interventional radiology services performed by specialists in pediatric imaging. The program is committed to compassionate care, innovating patient experiences, and has strong collaborations across various specialties.

Patient Care

The program operates within the state-of-the-art facilities at the Children’s Hospital Colorado, where high-volume imaging services are provided annually. Approximately 120,000 exams are conducted at the main campus, complemented by another 80,000 at satellite sites. The services encompass radiography, CT, PET/CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy. Subspecialty trained pediatric radiologists handle diverse imaging needs, which include neuro, chest, cardiac, body, musculoskeletal, and fetal imaging. Fellows are actively involved in daily clinical rounds where complex cases are discussed and managed in conjunction with attending physicians and multidisciplinary teams, enhancing their learning experience and clinical acumen.

Educational Opportunities

The Pediatric Radiology division offers a comprehensive fellowship program where education is paramount. This includes the Fellow Case of the Day series, where fellows review unknown cases that span multiple subspecialties such as musculoskeletal, neuro, gastrointestinal, and fetal imaging. Additionally, fellows participate in numerous multidisciplinary conferences that engage them in comprehensive discussions across different specialties that include tumor boards, surgery, and maternal-fetal medicine, amongst others. There are weekly core curriculum lectures specifically designed for fellows provided by pediatric radiology faculty and a journal club that fosters academic discourse.

Research Opportunities

Fellows have substantial opportunities for research involvement, where they select a mentor to guide them in their project, resulting in presentations at the Society of Pediatric Radiology and manuscript submissions. The program is equipped with an Advanced Imaging Lab that provides access to cutting-edge imaging technology and supports various research initiatives. Faculty are engaged in multiple grant-funded projects, promoting collaborative research efforts that advance pediatric imaging knowledge.

Training Sites

The training primarily occurs at the Children's Hospital Colorado, a leader in pediatric healthcare that offers fellows exposure to a diverse array of cases and subspecialty clinics. This collaborative environment allows fellows to gain valuable clinical and consultative experience while fostering relationships with referring physicians.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program offers visa sponsorship for international medical graduates and can facilitate applications for J-1 and H-1B visas. The fellowship is competitive, often attracting a diverse pool of applications from both international and domestic candidates, including those with DO degrees. As a result, the program is considered friendly to DOs and international graduates, promoting inclusivity in the selection process.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the Pediatric Radiology fellowship, applicants must have completed an accredited residency in Diagnostic Radiology. Candidates are typically expected to have graduated within a defined time frame; specific stipulations regarding the maximum number of attempts permitted on required exams such as the USMLE may also apply. Prospective applicants should be aware of these criteria to ensure compliance before applying.
