Residency Advisor

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is a dynamic and comprehensive training program designed for future leaders in women's health. With a total of 32 residents, the program admits eight residents annually across its four-year curriculum, fostering a collegial environment where diversity and inclusion are core values.

The primary clinical training site is HUP, complemented by rotations at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Veterans Administration of Philadelphia. Both of these locations are conveniently located within one mile of the HUP campus, ensuring residents receive a well-rounded experience that includes both community-based and tertiary care. The patient population served by the residency includes local community members from West Philadelphia and the surrounding regions, as well as patients referred from across the country, providing ample opportunities for exposure to high-volume and high-acuity cases. Last year alone, the program performed over 4,100 deliveries, 2,100 surgical procedures, and saw approximately 120,000 outpatient visits throughout the residency.

At HUP, residents benefit from the expertise of over 70 full-time faculty, midwives, and advanced practice providers who are dedicated to teaching and mentorship. The comprehensive training includes not only the general practice of obstetrics and gynecology but also advanced training in subspecialties such as Family Planning, Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Reproductive Genetics. This variety equips residents with necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their subsequent careers.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is meticulously designed to grant residents increasing autonomy and responsibility over the course of their training. Structured educational conferences are an integral part of the residency experience, focusing on key topics and areas vital for furthering knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology. Regularly scheduled conferences span the week, including:

  • **Monday**: Tracing Review, Intern Summer School;
  • **Tuesday**: Gynecology Pre-Operative Conference, Resident Review, OB Journal Club, Practice Bulletin Review, Colposcopy Conference;
  • **Wednesday**: MFM Journal Club, MFM Division Meeting;
  • **Thursday**: Grand Rounds, Resident Education Series, Gyn Onc service teaching, Gyn service teaching, Family Planning (PEACE) Division conference;
  • **Friday**: Urogynecology Division conference, REI Division conference, Gyn Onc Pathology conference.

Additional training includes simulation sessions focused on key competencies that align with best practices in obstetrics and gynecology, helping residents develop technical skills in a supportive educational environment.

Research Opportunities

The program fosters research engagement through a formal Resident Research Program. Residents receive comprehensive support for involvement in ongoing clinical and basic science research activities, bolstered by mentorship from faculty. Senior residents have opportunities to enhance their leadership skills through dedicated training programs, preparing them for successful careers after residency, whether entering practice or pursuing fellowship training.

Application Process and Requirements

The application process for the OBGYN residency at HUP includes several important components. Applicants are required to submit the following:

  • Personal statement;
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae;
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation;
  • Three letters of recommendation, with at least two from OB/GYN faculty;
  • Medical School transcripts;
  • USMLE transcripts, including Step 1 score;
  • Valid ECFMG Certificate, if applicable;
  • Completed Residency Application (applications accepted only through the Residency Centralized Application Service, or ResidencyCAS).

The program sponsors J1 visas for eligible international applicants, thereby supporting a diverse applicant pool. All candidates must certify they are non-tobacco users and are required to be vaccinated against SARS CoV-2 and influenza as a condition of employment. Furthermore, the program encourages applicants to demonstrate proactive engagement in women's health and leadership roles throughout their academic careers.
