The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program at Jefferson Health in New Jersey is a four-year ACGME-accredited program designed to cultivate the next generation of skilled OB/GYN physicians. The program's objectives encompass educating and training residents to competently practice obstetrics and gynecology, ensuring preparedness for board certification through the relevant accrediting boards. Structured written objectives for rotations are provided as per the guidelines set by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG). Residents will develop critical skills to deliver compassionate patient care, foster effective communication, understand the healthcare system's resources, and integrate medical knowledge related to established and evolving clinical sciences.

Curriculum

The residency program consists of a total of forty-eight (48) months of training, following an ACGME-block rotation schedule. The first year (PGY-1) includes rotations across various specialties, including a significant focus on obstetrics and gynecology. The rotations for each year are as follows:

  • PGY-1: 13 one-week rotations, including obstetrics (5.5 months), gynecologic surgery (3 months), internal medicine (1 month), neonatal intensive care (0.5 month), surgical intensive care (1 month), maternal-fetal medicine (1 month), and continuity clinic (0.5 day/week).
  • PGY-2: 12 four-week rotations with 7 months in obstetrics, 2 months in gynecologic surgery, 1 month in family planning, and further rotations in maternal-fetal medicine and elective opportunities.
  • PGY-3: Includes 4 months in obstetrics, 3.5 months in gynecologic surgery, and rotations in gynecology/oncology, urology/gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology.
  • PGY-4: 4.5 months in obstetrics, 5 months in gynecologic surgery, along with urology/gynecology and elective rotations.

Additionally, throughout the residency, there are numerous opportunities for residents to participate in conferences and didactic sessions, enhancing their learning through journal clubs, simulation lab experiences, and laparoscopic and robotic surgical training.

Training Sites

Residents in the program have access to a variety of state-of-the-art facilities, including Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, which recently underwent significant expansions to improve patient services. Additional training sites expand the diversity of cases and patient populations encountered, including the Cherry Hill Women's Center, Surgical Center of South Jersey, and South Jersey Fertility Center. Notably, the program provides comprehensive training in abortion care at an outpatient surgical facility, allowing residents practical experiences in managing various family planning methods.

Application Process

Applications for the residency program must be submitted through the ACOG’s ResidencyCAS platform. Key requirements for a successful application include:
