Overview of the Program

The University of Puerto Rico Family Medicine Residency Program at Carolina is designed to cultivate skilled, compassionate family physicians. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME and prides itself on a 100% passing rate for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) examination over the past eight years. This commitment ensures that residents receive a comprehensive education tailored to the challenges of modern healthcare.

Residents will gain hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, emphasizing patient-centered care through the use of a Federally Qualified Health Center and Patient-Centered Medical Home model.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured into a 13-block program that allows residents to immerse themselves in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Early in their training, residents engage in continuity clinics, enabling them to build a solid foundation in ambulatory skills. The curriculum is interactive and dynamic, incorporating longitudinal research opportunities, and promoting academic presentations at local and national conferences.

Rotations

The residency offers diverse clinical rotations, including but not limited to, family medicine, geriatrics, behavioral health, and community medicine. This variety ensures comprehensive training across multiple aspects of family medicine.

Special Clinics

Residents have access to specialized clinics focusing on home visits, minor procedures, diabetes care, and behavioral health. These opportunities are particularly beneficial in developing skills for managing underserved populations.

Research Opportunities

Research is a fundamental component of the training program. Residents engage in longitudinal research projects, which are critical in fostering a scholarly approach to evidence-based medicine. Research is not only supported but is highly encouraged within the residency framework.

Faculty

The faculty within the Department of Family Medicine includes a diverse group of experts specializing in various facets of family medicine, including geriatrics, behavioral sciences, and community health. This diverse expertise facilitates a rich learning environment.

Competitiveness and Applications

The program is competitive, welcoming graduates from both DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) and IMG (International Medical Graduate) backgrounds. Applicants should be aware that no more than one failure on the USMLE Step exams is preferred, aligning with common standards among competitive family medicine programs. The program is open to residents who have recently graduated or are completing their medical education.

Visa Sponsorship

The University of Puerto Rico Family Medicine Residency Program supports international applicants by sponsoring J-1 visas. This sponsorship enables qualified IMG applicants to obtain residency training in Puerto Rico, thus fostering diversity and bringing a global perspective to the residency cohort.
