The University of South Dakota School of Medicine General Surgery program is designed to train general surgeons to provide exceptional surgical care with a focus on preparing graduates for independent practice in rural settings. The curriculum spans five years with rotations covering a variety of specialties, including Acute Care Surgery, Trauma, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and more.

The program provides protected time for didactic lectures, weekly M&M conferences, resident-led lectures, grand rounds, simulation sessions, and journal clubs. Residents can expect to engage in subspecialty-specific conferences based on their rotations.

Applications are only accepted through ERAS. The deadline for the 2022-2023 academic year is November 19, 2021. Interviews are conducted virtually, and candidates will be contacted with available dates by invitation only.
