The White River Health System Internal Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME accredited program that accepts 10 residents per year. The program is located at White River Medical Center in Batesville, Arkansas. It is a traditional three-year Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Training program that partners with the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

The program aims to graduate highly qualified internists prepared to practice in any clinical setting and provide quality healthcare to medically underserved counties. Residents have the opportunity to train in a community and hospital environment while benefiting from the academic resources of a recognized medical center.

Eligibility for the program includes graduation from a medical school in the United States, Canada, or an accredited college of osteopathic medicine. For international medical graduates, additional qualifications such as certification from ECFMG or a full medical license in Arkansas are required. Successful passage of USMLE/COMPLEX Step 1 and Step 2 is necessary, with a minimum score of 225 for Step 2. Step 3 is strongly recommended for applicants whose graduation date was five years prior or more.

The program sponsors only ECFMG J1 visas with a minimum USMLE Step 2 score requirement of 230. Applications are reviewed through ERAS, and virtual interviews are conducted from late October to early December. The program offers 10 PGY1 positions, does not offer pre-match offers, and participates in NRMP SOAP for unfilled positions. Residents have access to professional learning environments and engaging communities to develop clinical skills and provide excellent medical care.

Residents at White River Health have gone on to pursue various specialties and practice locations upon graduation. The program emphasizes community outreach, clinical competence, and the importance of resident-physician engagement in healthcare education and practice.

The residency curriculum includes rotations in various specialties such as Internal Medicine, Neurology, Rheumatology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Critical Care, Geriatrics, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, and Emergency Medicine. Residents participate in a 4+1 block schedule with rotations at White River Medical Center and UAMS Medical Center.

The program provides housing at no cost during rotations at UAMS Medical Center. The annual salary varies by PGY level.

Overall, the White River Health System Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience for residents interested in serving rural communities and pursuing careers in internal medicine.
