Health Education Services/Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Program

Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center’s Internal Medicine residency program is a three-year program developed to cultivate adept and ethical physicians within a community hospital environment. The program is a collaborative initiative between Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center and Health Education Services, adhering to the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is approved for a total of 18 positions with six residents in each Postgraduate Year (PGY) class.

Located in rural southeast Missouri, the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center is a comprehensive medical facility with 410 licensed beds across two campuses. It operates the only emergency room in its primary service area and manages four rural health clinics as well as dedicated imaging and women's centers. The medical center is part of a larger multidisciplinary practice, collaborating with over 35 specialists across various fields including cardiology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and gastroenterology, which greatly benefits the residents' training through extensive clinical exposure.

Curriculum and Rotations

The Internal Medicine residency program features a detailed curriculum structured to optimize residents' training. The first year (PGY-1) encompasses rotations in inpatient care, critical care, and various subspecialties. Residents engage in hands-on experiences with clinical teams while also attending daily morning reports and regular simulation labs to refine essential skills such as code response and point-of-care ultrasound. The second year (PGY-2) continues with a focus on inpatient and outpatient experiences, exposing residents to a broader range of disciplines including gastroenterology and neurology. Lastly, during the third year (PGY-3), a combination of inpatient rotations, outpatient continuity clinics, and selected elective rotations encourages residents to tailor their learning to their career aspirations.

Research Opportunities

Residents have access to engage in quality improvement projects and patient safety initiatives throughout their training. Participation in research is encouraged, allowing residents to gain critical insight into contemporary medical practices and advance their professional development.

Eligibility and Application Process

Prospective applicants are required to apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from September 27 to December 1. The program does not sponsor any visas for applicants, making it essential for applicants to ensure their visa eligibility if required. USMLE/COMLEX scores are a pivotal part of the application, with the program preferring scores above set thresholds and allowing the higher score to be considered when both are submitted. Candidates are also encouraged to have at least some clinical experience in the United States. The preferred graduation date for applicants is within 36 months prior to the application. Only complete applications will be considered for interviews, and the program typically conducts around 60 interviews for 6 available positions.
