The Altru Family Medicine Residency program at Altru Health System in Grand Forks has been serving the community since 1976. The program focuses on training family medicine physicians to practice full-scope comprehensive medicine with an emphasis on rural care. The curriculum includes hospital-based and ambulatory care, obstetrics, sports medicine, addressing social determinants of health, and point-of-care ultrasound. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in fellowships in obstetrics and sports medicine.

Some highlights of the program's curriculum include a strong inpatient teaching service, busy obstetrical service, rural care rotations, diverse pediatric experience, elective block rotations, home visit program, and a state-of-the-art ultrasound lab. Residents also have teaching opportunities with medical, pharmacy, and athletic training students.

The program emphasizes resident wellness through various events and activities throughout the academic year, such as Ruttger's Retreat, resident education sessions, and participation in recreational sports leagues in Grand Forks.

For fourth-year medical students interested in the Acting Internship (AI) program offered by Altru Family Medicine Residency, approximately two positions are available. The application requirements include being in good standing with medical school, submitting an application with CV, statement of interest in Family Medicine, two letters of recommendation, completing a virtual interview, providing immunization records, and securing own housing and transportation.
