Duke University Hospital Rural Program

The Duke Rural Family Medicine Residency Program emphasizes the integration of world-class medical education with outstanding patient care, research, and community partnerships, particularly aimed at enhancing equity within healthcare delivery. The program facilitates residents to achieve proficiency in clinical medicine while forming close connections with their communities, thus preparing them for rewarding careers in rural family medicine. In the initial year, residents undergo comprehensive training at Duke Health before transitioning to a rural health center and community hospital for the latter two years, promoting full-spectrum family medicine.

Residents begin their continuity ambulatory clinics at the Duke Primary Care clinic in Oxford, thereby developing a patient panel throughout their residency.

Curriculum and Rotations

In the first year, the training sites include Duke Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Maria Parham Health, and the Durham VA Hospital. Residents engage primarily in the Duke Family Medicine Residency, participating in shared didactic sessions and programming for the entire duration of the residency. The continuity clinic is crucial as it forms the base of patient care and developing clinical skills.

Years two and three primarily use Duke Primary Care Oxford as the main training site, where residents work with a dedicated healthcare team composed of family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and social workers, providing comprehensive care for diverse patient populations.

Another essential training site is Maria Parham Health, a Duke LifePoint Hospital, which serves as the main hospital training location for the last two years of residency. The hospital boasts a wide array of medical specialties, skilled nurses, and advanced technology, effectively serving the local community.

The curriculum includes active participation in clinical rotations covering various aspects of family medicine, encompassing inpatient medicine, outpatient care, emergency medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and geriatrics. Residents are mandated to perform a range of procedures, enhancing their skill set and readiness for multifaceted patient care.

Research Opportunities

The CARiNG-StARR Research Residency Pathway supports residents focusing on research related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. This pathway provides a unique opportunity that includes protected research time, allowing residents to conduct significant research while maintaining clinical competence.

Unique Aspects of the Program

The Dukes Rural Family Medicine residency has a significant focus on community engagement, health equity, and leadership development. Residents engage in community outreach and advocacy, equipping them with the tools to become effective leaders and advocates for health equity. There is a requirement for residents to complete a community-engaged scholarly project over the two years of training.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be graduating from an LCME-accredited medical school, be set for graduation within the specified years, and hold a passing score on Step I of USMLE. Additionally, male applicants must have registered with Selective Service within the designated time to avoid violations of federal law.

Competitiveness and Visa Support

The program is designed to welcome diverse candidates and illustrates a commitment to equitable opportunities for all applicants, including DOs and international medical graduates (IMGs). However, the residency does not offer visa sponsorship.
