- Intro to Family Medicine – 4 weeks
- Family Medicine Teaching Service – 10 weeks
- Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and several electives such as Cardiology, Surgery, and Geriatrics.
The program emphasizes hands-on learning through rotations that are further enhanced by didactics held three days a week, academic half days, and resident-led journal clubs.
Training Sites
The primary training site is located in Bay City, Michigan, which serves as the hub for the residency’s ambulatory care experience. Residents provide care in a Patient-Centered Medical Home model, allowing them to manage their patient panels with increasing responsibility over the three-year training period. Key facilities include:
- 19 examination rooms
- 2 procedure rooms
- Dedicated ultrasound room equipped with state-of-the-art technology
Residents gain experience in a variety of procedures, including but not limited to skin biopsies, joint injections, and prenatal care.
Research Opportunities
The McLaren Family Medicine program emphasizes scholarly activities and offers residents significant research time. Initiatives like evidence-based workshops, protected research time, and opportunities to present findings at various conferences support this emphasis. Application Requirements
The program has specific eligibility criteria for applicants which include:
- Graduation from medical school within the last three years.
- Passing scores on USMLE or COMLEX exams on the first or second attempt prior to graduation.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, as the program does not offer visa sponsorship.
- Submission of three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a board-certified Family Medicine physician.
- Clinical experience in the U.S., preferably within Family Medicine.
Interviews are conducted virtually and are by invitation only, enhancing the personalized nature of the recruitment process.
