St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program at Warren Hospital offers a comprehensive and focused training experience designed to develop residents into compassionate and skilled family physicians. Located in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, the program has established an outstanding reputation through its dual accreditation by both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), being the first program in the nation to achieve this milestone.

Curriculum

The curriculum within the family medicine residency is structured to provide progressive responsibility and experiential learning throughout the three years of training. The first two weeks of the PGY-1 year consist of an orientation which includes various certification courses such as PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support), and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program). After the orientation, residents participate in a continuity clinic, a core component that includes half-day sessions each week throughout their residency.

Educational Activities

The educational environment at St. Luke’s integrates hands-on patient care with structured didactic sessions and regular departmental meetings. Academic Day Lectures take place every Wednesday afternoon, providing residents with opportunities to engage in lectures and workshops. They are complemented by board review sessions, where residents participate in group studies designed to prepare them for board examinations.

Additionally, the program collaborates with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Postdoctoral Training Institute (OPTI), offering residents access to resources and visiting professors to enhance their educational experience.

Rotations

Residents at St. Luke’s participate in various rotations in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The program facilitates comprehensive exposure through affiliations with local hospitals, ensuring a broad spectrum of medical experiences. There are also opportunities to work in nursing homes and engage in home visit programs, which bridge gaps in care for homebound patients.

Research and Scholarly Activities

Residents are actively encouraged to engage in research and scholarly activities. Each resident completes a quality improvement project in their senior year and undertakes a research project that they present at conferences. Monthly meetings with research faculty help in guiding the residents through the process of designing and implementing research studies and quality projects.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The program attracts a diverse range of applicants, including those from DO and IMG backgrounds. While competitive, the program encourages applicants from all educational backgrounds. To apply, candidates must be recent graduates from a recognized medical school and preferably have at least one year of U.S. clinical experience. Additionally, three letters of recommendation are needed, and completion of USMLE or COMLEX examinations is necessary. Importantly, the program does not sponsor visas at this time.

Visa Support

Currently, St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program does not provide visa sponsorship for international applicants, which is a significant consideration for IMG candidates.
