The program also fosters hands-on procedural experience, covering essential family medicine procedures such as vasectomies, IUD insertions, colposcopies, and skin procedures. Residents provide prenatal care, monitor pregnancies, and may even participate in deliveries during their training.

Curriculum and Training Structure

This three-year program welcomes five new residents each cycle. The curriculum is structured to encompass a variety of core rotations across all three years:

First-Year Rotations

First-year residents will have a significant opportunity for inpatient care. Typical rotations include:

  • Inpatient Internal Medicine Service: 8 weeks
  • Inpatient Family Medicine Call Service: 4 weeks
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU): 4 weeks
  • Surgery Selective: 4 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology: 4 weeks

Additionally, residents will have one full clinic day each week at the Fruitport Family Medicine Clinic.

Second-Year Rotations

In the second year, residents have greater exposure to elective rotations enabling exploration of specialties:

  • Inpatient Family Medicine: 8 weeks
  • Geriatrics: 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Electives: 12 weeks

Third-Year Rotations

The final year is tailored to the resident's interests, allowing for further specialization:

  • Inpatient Family Medicine: 8 weeks
  • Dermatology: 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory Gynecology: 4 weeks
  • Electives: 28 weeks

Didactics and Learning Opportunities

Residents participate in didactic sessions every Wednesday afternoon, covering critical topics through journals, hands-on skill labs, and guest lecturers. Additional opportunities for unique experiences include:

  • Continuity Delivery: Residents manage prenatal care and assist with deliveries.
  • Community Outreach: Participation in local health education activities.
  • Sports Medicine: Providing medical care at sporting events.

Research and Community Engagement

The program encourages residents to engage in research and community outreach. Various opportunities allow participation in health care initiatives that serve the diverse populations in Michigan. The program provides a supportive environment fostering personal and professional growth.

Application Process and Competitiveness

The program is competitive, welcoming all qualified applicants, including DOs and IMGs. Special application requirements may include a certain timeline for graduation from medical school and a limit on failed STEP exams. Applications are exclusively accepted via ERAS, and the residency offers visa sponsorship for the J-1 visa.
