Aim for projects you can realistically complete before applications.

Prioritize roles where you actually learn methods and contribute intellectually, even if the journal is humble.

Seek mentors who care more about getting you across the finish line than about chasing Nature.

Accept that a portfolio of modest but real publications and presentations usually beats a single high‑impact manuscript that may or may not exist in time.

If a project organically has a shot at a stronger journal—great. Submit there. But do not redesign your entire early career around journal impact factor numbers that residency committees barely glance at.
