Campbell University Program

The Conway Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program is sponsored by Campbell University and is accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for 15 approved positions. This unique program emphasizes comprehensive training and substantial support from the Conway Medical Center (CMC) Healthcare organization, along with dedicated teaching faculty and the sponsoring institution, Campbell University. The program is structured to provide residents with a robust clinical experience, incorporating all core outpatient and inpatient rotations, as well as necessary subspecialty rotations required by the ACGME.

Residents in the program will benefit from a well-organized didactics schedule, which comprises one half-day per week (5 hours) of protected learning time. This time includes a mix of attending lectures, case presentations, book clubs, journal clubs, and board review sessions. Moreover, residents are expected to participate in a monthly morbidity and mortality conference in addition to attending tumor boards. Daily morning reports and patient rounds with attending physicians are also integral parts of the inpatient medicine service experience.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum of the Transitional Year Residency at CMC is structured into four-week blocks and allows residents to engage in a variety of electives ranging from Anesthesiology, Behavioral Health, and Cardiology to more specialized fields such as Pathology, Radiology, and Wound Care. Residents will also experience monthly didactic sessions which include journal clubs, family medicine conferences, and grand rounds. Advanced Placement requirements apply for certain electives, which delineate the direct patient care and training expectations.

Electives offered during the year encompass a vast array of specialties such as Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Neurology, and Palliative Care, ensuring that residents receive a comprehensive exposure to different fields of medicine.

Training Sites

Training occurs at various locations, including the Conway Medical Center, which remains a leading healthcare provider serving Horry County. CMC has continued its legacy of care since its inception in the 1920s, providing residents with the opportunity to work in a facility well-equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The program also emphasizes community engagement, and during the second and third years, residents will provide free medical services at the Friendship Medical Clinic, which serves uninsured adults.

Research Opportunities

The Conway Medical Center prides itself on promoting research through its residency programs, allowing residents to participate in ongoing clinical research initiatives. This provides a platform for residents to contribute to medical knowledge and improve community health outcomes.

Resident Benefits and Support

The CMC Transitional Year Residency offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary of $62,000, continuing education allowances, and health insurance coverage. Specific allowances include a $1,500 annual continuing education budget and a monthly meal allowance. The structure also provides access to wellness programs, including fitness centers and wellness activities.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program is competitive, welcoming applications from both MD and DO allopathic students. However, it's important to note that the program does not sponsor visas, and applicants must be prepared to meet the eligibility criteria set forth by the program, including passing required medical licensure examinations without failed attempts.

Application Requirements

Potential applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements, including passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK/CS or equivalent COMLEX examinations with no failed attempts. Graduation from medical school must have occurred within the past two years. The program has a strict policy regarding failed attempts at licensure examinations, as those with more than two failures may not be considered.
