Southeastern Regional Medical Center Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at UNC Health Southeastern, located in Lumberton, North Carolina, is designed to educate and empower community-based physicians capable of providing care for under-served populations in the Southeastern U.S.

Established in July 2015, the program is accredited by the ACGME, comprising 24 total positions—8 per year—with a unique partnership with Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Residents are engaged in comprehensive clinical training through a carefully structured curriculum tailored to advance their competencies in both inpatient and outpatient family medicine.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum incorporates a variety of rotations to ensure well-rounded training. In the first year, residents primarily focus on hospital-based rotations, engaging with diverse patient populations in critical environments. As they progress into the second and third years, residents shift to community-based clinics, with longitudinal experiences that include geriatrics and palliative care, emphasizing continuity of care over three years of training.

Didactic learning is integrated into the weekly schedule, including Wednesday emergency medicine lectures and Friday family medicine didactics that focus on case presentations, journal clubs, and board reviews.

Research Opportunities

Visa Support

Currently, the program does not sponsor visas. Applicants must either be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents with a Green Card to apply.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The Family Medicine Residency Program at UNC Health Southeastern is considered competitive; applicants from diverse backgrounds, including DO and IMG candidates, are encouraged to apply. Specific eligibility requirements include graduation from an accredited medical school within the last three years, completion of USMLE or COMLEX Steps 1 and 2 with no more than three combined failed attempts, and ECFMG certification for IMG applicants as a prerequisite for matriculation.

Applications must be submitted exclusively through ERAS, and any materials submitted via alternative methods will not be considered. Candidates interested in the program should be proactive in completing their applications and providing necessary documentation such as personal statements, medical school transcripts, and letters of recommendation.
