The HCA Healthcare/Mercer University School of Medicine/Grand Strand Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program is a three-year, fully-accredited program affiliated with Grand Strand Medical Center. The program aims to train well-rounded family physicians capable of balancing medical practice with healthy personal lifestyles.

Residents have the opportunity to see continuity patients in a modern outpatient clinic supervised by excellent family medicine faculty. They also participate in case scenarios in a state-of-the-art simulation training lab to enhance clinical skills and procedures in a safe environment.

The curriculum includes a variety of didactic sessions covering core family medicine topics such as medical grand rounds, case conferences, journal club conferences, and board review sessions. The program emphasizes physician empathy, patient-physician relationship, quality of care, and patient satisfaction as part of lifelong self-reflection and physician wellness.

Application requirements for the program include submitting applications through ERAS, providing at least three letters of recommendation, Dean's letter/MSPE, formal transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, and a personal statement. High scores on USMLE/COMLEX exams are considered competitive.

The program accepts 6 residents per year, for a total of 18 residents. International applicants must have ECGMG Certification and applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last 2 years, unless exceptions apply. They accept J-1 Visas on a case-by-case basis but do not accept H-1 Visas.
