John Peter Smith Hospital (Tarrant County Hospital District) Program

The JPS Health Network Orthopaedic Residency Program is a comprehensive training program established in the 1970s, dedicated to providing exceptional educational experiences in orthopaedic surgery. With its mission to develop skilled surgeons who will excel clinically and lead in their communities, the program has successfully trained over 175 orthopaedic surgeons worldwide, emphasizing not just surgical competence but also integrity and leadership.

Program Structure

The JPS Orthopaedic Surgery Residency spans five years and accommodates four residents per class, fostering a collaborative learning environment. The curriculum is meticulously designed to offer extensive clinical exposure and instruction across all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, ensuring residents develop a robust skill set.

Training Locations

Core training occurs at JPS Health Network, a prominent Level II Trauma Center, which serves Tarrant County. The facility's high patient volume and diverse pathology present residents with a wealth of clinical experiences. Additionally, residents rotate through Cook Children's Medical Center, a leading pediatric hospital providing access to specialized training in pediatric orthopaedic conditions. Rotations with community-based orthopaedic surgeons further enhance the educational experience by exposing residents to varying surgical techniques and practice styles.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to meet all ACGME and ABOS milestones, incorporating a balance of didactic learning and clinical practice. Weekly didactics are dedicated to various subspecialty topics, ensuring that residents have protected time for non-clinical study. The rotation schedule includes significant blocks in trauma, pediatrics, spine, total joints, and research, thus promoting a well-rounded education.

Research Opportunities

A strong emphasis is placed on research, with each resident required to participate in clinical or basic science research projects. Three months are allocated expressly for research pursuits, allowing residents to either develop their own projects or collaborate with faculty. The partnership with the UNT Health Science Center facilitates access to valuable research resources.
