Saint Joseph Hospital offers a comprehensive General Surgery Residency Program emphasizing hands-on experience across various surgical domains. With an annual volume of approximately 15,000 operative procedures, including an average of 1,300 major cases per chief resident, the program prepares its residents for the complexities of modern surgical practices.

Program Overview

Each year, the program accepts 6 categorical residents into the five-year track aimed at preparing for the General Surgery Boards, alongside 5 preliminary residents who complete their internship before advancing into other specialties.1 This ensures that the residency experience is not only medically robust but also tailored to foster resilience, leadership, and adaptability within its trainees.

The majority of residency training occurs at Saint Joseph Hospital (SJH), which boasts a wide array of acute care and elective surgical services. Rotations also include opportunities at nearby ambulatory surgery centers, as well as at significant facilities such as:

Global Surgery Program

Application Requirements

The program only utilizes the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) for the application process. Essential components of the application include:

• Dean's letter
• Medical school transcript
• Three letters of recommendation
• USMLE transcript (COMLEX will not be accepted)
• Introductory Video Interview

Interviews are conducted virtually through Microsoft Teams, with formal interviews commencing after the review of video submissions.1
