TidalHealth Program

The TidalHealth Anesthesiology Residency Program has received accreditation from the ACGME, marking the beginning of its first residency cohort in July 2024. This categorical, four-year training program accommodates four residents annually, designed to cultivate compassionate and motivated anesthesiologists who are equipped to lead anesthesia care teams. Residents will engage closely with faculty, nurse anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional patient care. The program aims to foster a culture of mentorship, where residents, as they advance, will be encouraged to train future healthcare providers.

The primary training site for this program is TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, a tertiary-care hospital and Level III trauma center serving over eight million individuals in the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula. The surgical volume is robust, with more than 23,000 surgical procedures, 20,000 admissions, and numerous trauma visits each year. Residents will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of cases including cardiac, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, trauma, orthopedics, and obstetrics.

In addition to the primary site, residents will gain experience through rotations at TidalHealth Nanticoke and affiliated centers such as Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., which expands their exposure to diverse patient populations and clinical practices.

Curriculum

The curriculum at TidalHealth is structured to provide residents with comprehensive training throughout their four years. The first year focuses on foundational aspects of medical and surgical care along with critical and emergent care. Interns will familiarize themselves with core anesthesia procedures and concepts, supported by dedicated teaching time for preparation for the USMLE or COMLEX exams. Subsequent years will allow residents to delve deeper into anesthesia specialties, enhancing both skills and autonomy as they progress through the training.

The residency program includes protected didactic learning time weekly, emphasizing important topics such as ethics, professionalism, and systems-based practice. TidalHealth's newly established state-of-the-art simulation center will further enhance training consistency and patient safety through realistic procedural practice.

Research Opportunities

The Richard A. Henson Research Institute supports residents in their research endeavors, equipping them with resources to complete projects that enhance their learning and contributions to the field of anesthesiology. The emphasis on scholarly activities is a vital part of developing a well-rounded anesthesiologist who is equipped for independent practice and board certification.

Application Process

Candidates for the TidalHealth Anesthesiology Residency Program must apply through the National Resident Matching Program via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program welcomes applications from U.S. medical school graduates who are either current students expecting to graduate or those who have graduated within the last four years. Additionally, applicants must have no more than two attempts to pass any course or rotation during medical school and similarly for any portion of the USMLE or COMLEX exams.

For international medical graduates, the program requires successful medical education completion, certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), and clinical experience in the U.S. is preferred. The program highly favors applicants who have achieved USMLE Clinical Knowledge scores above 220 and those who graduated within the last three years.

It sponsors visas such as the J-1 visa for international medical graduates, facilitating their participation in the program.
