This program is structured to encompass both inpatient and outpatient experiences, providing significant exposure to a diverse patient population across two primary training sites: Bethesda North Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Program Structure
The residency accommodates eight residents per year, totaling 32 residents across all training levels. The program includes:
- 20 months of obstetrics
- 19 months of gynecology
- Involvement in other rotations, including electives and continuity clinics.
The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and fulfills the requirements for certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Training Sites
1. Good Samaritan Hospital: As one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in Cincinnati, Good Samaritan provides a high volume of complex obstetric cases and has a world-class Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The hospital reports nearly 7,000 deliveries annually, making it the largest single-hospital obstetrics service in the region. The facilities include a 24-room Labor/Delivery/Recovery unit and dedicated units for high-risk mothers and newborn care.
2. Bethesda North Hospital: Located in Montgomery, this facility has significantly expanded its women's health services over the years, with over 4,000 annual deliveries and a strong commitment to providing comprehensive outpatient services, including a thriving continuity clinic for prenatal and gynecologic care.
Curriculum and Rotations
The curriculum is designed to provide residents with comprehensive education through a blend of intense clinical exposure and structured didactic learning. Residents participate in rotations across obstetrics, gynecology, primary care, and specialty clinics. In particular, the program emphasizes:
- Exposure to high-risk obstetric patients in dedicated specialty clinics.
- Involvement in surgical experiences that include laparoscopic procedures and robotics.
- Regular attendance at grand rounds, case discussions, and didactic sessions that cover critical topics in obstetrics and gynecology.
This rigorous framework ensures that residents obtain substantial hands-on experience and develop the clinical judgment necessary for independent practice.
Research and Scholarly Activity
The program fosters a culture of research, offering residents opportunities to engage in various scholarly activities. Residents are encouraged to collaborate with faculty on research projects, resulting in presentation opportunities at national conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Some areas of focus include maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Benefits and Support
Alongside competitive salaries, residents receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental insurance, professional liability insurance, and a generous vacation policy, allowing up to four weeks off. Additional benefits include stipends for educational resources and financial support for attending professional meetings.
Visa Sponsorship and Competitiveness
The program does not sponsor visas for international medical graduates, and applicants must be permanent residents or green card holders. The TriHealth Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is highly competitive, requiring a solid academic background with specific thresholds for USMLE and COMLEX scores (235 and 650, respectively) with no more than two attempts on either exam. Interviews are conducted virtually, and candidates are expected to meet application deadlines through the ResidencyCAS platform.
Unique Aspects
TriHealth is distinguished by its commitment to providing an inclusive and diverse training environment. Residents are trained by a faculty of dedicated teaching physicians across both training sites, offering varied perspectives and expertise. The program stresses the importance of teamwork, communication, and the incorporation of technology into patient care.
Additionally, the focus on both surgical skills and clinical excellence prepares graduates not only for board certification but for successful careers in various settings, whether as generalists or subspecialists.
The TriHealth Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program equips its residents with the knowledge, skills, and experience to thrive as future leaders in the field of women's health.
