The University of Michigan Health-West Internal Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME accredited program with deep roots in its osteopathic heritage. The program is proud to be part of University of Michigan Health-West and offers a comprehensive 3-year curriculum. The program aims to train well-rounded internal medicine physicians who are competent, compassionate, and empathetic to patients and their families.
Residents have access to a wide range of specialties including Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and more. The program has a research department to foster clinical questions and develop research studies. There are opportunities for working as hospitalists, in outpatient IM offices, or pursuing fellowships.
The hospital is a 206-bed community hospital with state-of-the-art technology located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Residents work closely with hospitalists and specialists from various fields. The program has a beautiful residency clinic with a multi-disciplinary team and resources including social work, case managers, on-site pharmacists, dental office, and a food pantry.
The curriculum includes a block schedule covering various specialties each year and offers elective rotations. Residents are also scheduled for clinical experience in a primary care setting. Didactics include Grand Rounds, Case Reports, Harrison’s Book Club, Journal Club, and more.
Application requirements include submitting applications via ERAS, being a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or having a work authorization card or J1 Visa. The program does not generally sponsor visas for medical residents. Candidates must meet Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) requirements and have graduated within one year of the match. MD candidates must be from recognized medical schools.
