The University of South Florida Otolaryngology Residency Program is a comprehensive five-year training program that focuses on preparing residents to function independently and expertly in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases and disorders affecting the ears, nose, throat, neck, and maxillofacial region. Residents benefit from a diverse clinical and surgical experience at four affiliated institutions: Tampa General Hospital, James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, and Nemours Children's Specialty Care at Wolfson Children's Hospital.
The program emphasizes providing hands-on training, a well-rounded didactic schedule, tumor boards, and various clinical conferences. Residents also have dedicated research time during their PGY3 and PGY4 years, with support from a dedicated research staff.
Throughout the program, residents have opportunities for hands-on training in extensive fields such as sinus surgery, trauma plating, soft tissue reconstruction, and in-office procedures. Residents are supported to attend academic conferences, and various resources, including textbooks, journals, and Qbanks, are available electronically.
The clinical training is structured to gradually advance residents' skills and knowledge from PGY1 to PGY5. Residents rotate among training institutions including Tampa General Hospital, Moffitt Cancer Center, James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, USF Health – Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare, and USF Health – South Tampa Center for Advanced Healthcare. In the later years, residents take on more complex surgical procedures and greater responsibilities.
The program accepts three residents per year through the NRMP Match program. Residents are offered four full weeks of vacation and have health insurance provided by the university. There are dedicated research blocks during the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, totaling 4-6 months for research pursuits.
