Munson Medical Center Program

The Munson Family Medicine Residency Program provides a robust and comprehensive training experience that integrates both osteopathic and allopathic medicine. This unopposed residency program, which is dual accredited, welcomes both DO and MD candidates and is structured as a 6/6/6 program, preparing residents for the complexities of rural and small-town family practice.

The program is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSUCHM). By providing both ambulatory and hospital-based training opportunities, residents gain essential skills needed for full-spectrum family medicine, including inpatient, outpatient, obstetric care, and various office-based procedures. Program Overview

Residents participate in night and weekend calls to enhance their clinical exposure and experience.1

Academics

A significant component of the residency is the academic schedule, which features weekly didactics held on Wednesdays and at other times throughout the week, covering vital topics such as evidence-based medicine, EKG reviews, and various specialties such as dermatology and obstetrics.2 Additionally, the residency includes academic weeks that provide residents with opportunities to engage in specialized learning without rotational assignments, allowing for a deep dive into topics like occupational medicine and adolescent medicine.3

Certifications

Throughout the residency, residents are required to obtain several crucial certifications, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP). Optional certifications such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) can also enhance a resident's qualifications for practice.4

Clinical Tracks and Elective Rotations

To tailor their training experience, residents can pursue different clinical tracks such as Geriatrics, International Medicine, and Sports Medicine. This flexibility allows residents to explore their specific interests within family medicine further.5 Moreover, residents can participate in elective rotations, allowing them to gain experience across various service lines, including cardiology, nephrology, and even international experiences in countries like Belize and Japan.6

Research Opportunities

Residents have previously investigated topics such as marijuana use in pregnancy and the effectiveness of using simulation for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) performance. Through its partnership with the PCEA Chogoria Hospital in Kenya, residents can engage in international medicine experiences, helping to establish a family medicine residency while providing care to underserved populations.8

Residents participate in local events, such as providing sports physicals at schools and conducting health screenings at events like the Special Olympics, fostering an excellent relationship with the community while enhancing their practical experience.9

Application Information

Applying to the Munson Family Medicine Residency is competitive, and specific application requirements must be met. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; the program does not sponsor visas. Medical school graduates should have graduated within two years of the start date of the residency, and international medical graduates must have valid ECFMG certification and completed rotations at ACGME-accredited sites.10 An important note for applicants is that all Step exam results must be available by the time the Match Rank Order List is submitted, with particular attention given to the number of attempts to pass these exams.11
