Munson Medical Center Program

The Munson Family Medicine Residency Program at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan, is a dual-accredited 6/6/6 program that integrates osteopathic and allopathic medicine. Affiliated with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, this rural-based program trains physicians for rural and small-town practices. The program focuses on full-spectrum care, including inpatient, outpatient, obstetrics, and office-based procedures, with an emphasis on rural health care.

Residents have the opportunity to participate in research projects, engage in international medicine through a partnership with Chogoria PCEA Hospital in Kenya, and benefit from monthly specialized courses in various medical topics. The Munson Family Medicine Residency Program is dual-accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), accepting both DO and MD candidates. The program accepts candidates from both osteopathic and allopathic backgrounds and provides a collaborative learning environment. Residents work at the Munson Family Medicine Center, a full-service hospital-owned facility, and Munson Medical Center, a 442-bed nonprofit hospital serving as the regional referral center in northern Michigan.

Community outreach opportunities include providing sports physicals at area schools, participating in the Detroit Red Wings Training Camp, conducting Special Olympics health screens, offering community education seminars, and engaging in homeless outreach and street medicine.

The program's mission is to train high-quality family medicine physicians prepared to serve rural communities in northern Michigan.
